In a sequel to the original series, Valerie Frizzle retires from instruction and passes the keys of the Magic School Motorcoach over to her younger sis, Fiona Frizzle, to commence on new adventures with her class. As they journey on their heady new field-trips, they discover new locations, creatures, time periods and more than to learn about the wonders of science, educating young viewers along the way.
Why Information technology's A Bad Field Trip
Alert: Don't put in anything about Vyond, as it is common for fans to compare this show'south blitheness to Vyond.
- Ms. Frizzle isn't in the serial that much anymore. She'south been replaced by her sis, Fiona; while the thought of a legacy character is not a bad idea, the problem is that Fiona is a poor substitute of the original character.
- Abysmal and awful writing.
- The flash animation is express, simplistically atrocious and dreadful. Occasionally, some animation frames are missing. Making information technology even worse is that the original press release said the series would be animated in CGI. The grapheme movements expect incredibly stilted and unnatural and none of the characters show any sort of body linguistic communication whatsoever.
- Tries way too hard to exist hip and absurd towards kids. One episode, "Space Mission: Selfie", is centered around selfies, hence its title.
- Unnecessary removal of characters similar Phoebe, who was 1 of the primary characters in the original show.
- Speaking of which, Phoebe has been replaced past a new grapheme named Jyoti, who is a "perfect" graphic symbol with fiddling to no flaws and little personality to speak of.
- And it isn't simply Jyoti who'due south a banal mary sue. Every bit most all of the original students have been flanderized to the signal where they all experience like the aforementioned grapheme with different designs. As they have none of the original personalities and individual strengths/weaknesses that they had in the original series, and are all now boring and forgettable.
- The character designs are inexpensive, plain, bland, and lazy. All the kids have the same faces and torsos equally each other and the characters await nothing similar they did in the original show, especially Arnold and Tim.
- At that place is an entire episode centered around feces. We kid you not. It'due south called "Waste matter Not, Want Not", aforementioned goes to the original series episode "Brooklyn!" where Arnold gets shot while wearing a bulletproof belong.
- Speaking of the "Waste Not, Desire Not" episode, it spends a majority of it's runtime smushing the "poop is keen" message into the audition's face by acknowledging how it serves as a fertilizer and has beneficial leaner. But it doesn't mention that it also contains a much larger corporeality of harmful leaner too (aka, the master reason why people throw abroad their carrion in the first identify) until the terminate. Which tin actually give it's immature audience the wrong message about feces that information technology'due south actually keen, when it isn't due to the amount of malevolent germs it contains. Non to mention how it's also a musical episode with 99% of its song revolving around, you guessed it, poop.
- The vocalisation acting tin can be very bland at times, particularly in the showtime of the opening theme where Arnold's voice actor delivers the famous line, "Please permit this be a normal field trip!" rather dully.
- Some of the concepts tin be expert, but they get wasted due to the poor writing.
Redeeming Qualities
- The vocalism acting is commonly practiced, with some of the characters still retaining their roles. Fifty-fifty Amos Crawley (who voiced Arnold in Season ane) and Stuart Rock (who voiced Ralphie), both from the original 1994 series, return every bit other characters. There are also other well-known names such as Kate McKinnon and Will Arnett in the cast.
- It retains the theme vocal from the original series (and a nicely redone version sung by Lin-Manuel Miranda), also as the opening being an homage to the original series; information technology is commonly speculated that the series had to utilise Wink instead of CGI due to the budget being blown on getting Miranda to sing the theme song, though in that location is no proof to back this up.
- The adventures they continue are somewhat enjoyable.
- Despite the fact that they expect completely different, none of the returning characters accept been flanderized and are however likable.
- Despite the removal of Phoebe, there is a valid explanation as to why she is absent from the series. Reason being that Phoebe went back to her former school, which is why she is replaced by Jyoti. But at the same fourth dimension, this reason is poor as Phoebe was happy in Miss Frizzle's class.
- The evidence'southward iii specials, "Kids in Infinite", "The Frizz Connection", and "In the Zone" are improvements over the testify with decent and better-looking animation (although the character designs from the show still remain). They also paid tribute to Joanna Cole, the author of the original books, who died in 2020.
Reception
The Magic Schoolhouse Bus Rides Again has a 6.2/x on IMDb. Despite the mixed ratings, The Magic School Bus Rides Again was critically panned by fans of the original for its animation, stories, writing, characters, unnecessary removal of characters from the original show (most notably Phoebe), and the dumbing-downwards of the Magic School Charabanc.
